in his letter of resignation, Kelaita wrote:

“I have always strived to assist community leaders and decision-makers through providing unvarnished medical and scientific information, as well as technical expertise unbiased by subjectivity or partisan influence. Under the current political climate, this is no longer possible. Due to these considerations, I am resigning as Health Officer. 11 months ago, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shut down Solid Biosciences’ (SLDB) “IGNITE DMD” Phase I/II clinical trial after one of the young patients involved in the trial suffered a “serious adverse event.” Despite the patient in question recovering, no new patients suffering such serious adverse events, and the company providing the FDA with “information and measures intended to improve patient safety” and “data related to manufacturing process improvements,” the FDA declined to allow trials to resume in July, and asked Solid Biosciences to provide even more information on its trials, and on the safety measures it proposed to add to get the trials back on track.

Fast forward three more months and — success!

On Thursday, Solid Biosciences confirmed that the FDA has “lifted the clinical hold” on its trials, acknowledging that the company has “satisfactorily addressed all clinical hold questions.” Going forward, the

One of the government’s top scientific advisers has warned that the current social distancing measures aren’t enough to halt a second wave of coronavirus.

Sir Jeremy Farrar, a member of the Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), said the government had been “too slow” to act in the initial stages of the pandemic.

He added that the recent decision to impose a 10pm curfew on pubs and restaurants “do not go far enough to reduce transmission”.

“It is for politicians to make these very tough decisions, but public trust, confidence and understanding are critical to effective public health – and at the moment that trust is fragile and fracturing,” Sir Jeremy wrote in The Times.

Health experts call for a national COVID-19 strategy rather than current ‘whack-a-mole’ approach

Public health experts have proposed a national COVID-19 strategy based on the Obama administration’s HIV/AIDS strategy.

In a newly published paper in the AIDS and Behavior journal, experts from multiple universities in the United States used the structure of the 2010 and 2015 National HIV/AIDS Strategy documents to suggest what a strategy for fighting COVID-19 should look like. These experts include prominent professors of public health and epidemiology, all of whom have worked with the CDC on prior epidemics.

A national strategy, they say, should be transparent, comprehensive and science-driven.
